Unlucky 13th for Lloyd

Stunning drive nets no reward

Whilst Lewis Hamilton claimed his debut win at the Montreal Grand Prix - rising kart star Daniel Lloyd was experiencing the tougher side of motor-sport.

Competing in the 3rd round of the British Super 1 Junior Rotax Max kart championship at the PFi circuit, the Huddersfield driver had overcome worries about a lack of power from his motor in order to claim 7th place on the grid for the Final at the challenging Lincolnshire track.

As the 30-strong field hammered into the first corner, the argy bargy started - “I’m not sure who was doing the shoving but as we came out of the first corner and ran down to the second, I was really getting knocked about” said Daniel.

With the pack so tightly bunched after the start, making it through PFi’s notoriously tricky first hairpin is always a ‘hold on tight and see’ experience - “I felt a whack and I was just launched forward” explained the teenager, “I actually took off and landed on top of (Kazuki) Hiramine [a Japanese racer based in England]. I jumped out of the kart, pulled it off Kazuki’s and managed to get going but I was stone last.”

This was like a red rag to a bull for the 15-year old, who started a fantastic charge. Lloyd sliced his way past 17 drivers, before running out of laps and taking the chequered in 13th place.

“I’m very disappointed” he fumed “I think I’m now genuinely out of the running for the championship. Luke Varley and Andrew Tooley are comfortable in first and second place, and will have to have disastrous rounds in order for me to win. My realistic goal is to go for 3rd – that’s the target. But if I finish 2nd, I’ll qualify for the World Finals [Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, 1 December 2007]…So I’m definitely not giving up.”

Next weekend (June 17) will race at Larkhall in Scotland (where on his last visit, he finished 2nd), for the Stars of Tomorrow championship.
