Lloyd downbeat - despite taking 3rd place

Huddersfield race ace on podium again, but says
it's not enough

“Dreadful!” was Daniel Lloyd’s assessment of his trip to Larkhall, Scotland for the 4th round of the BRDC Stars of Tomorrow championship.

“We’ve struggled for pace at recent meetings and thought we’d pretty much cured it after testing but the problems came back in Scotland.” A new engine improved matters, but still not enough to give the Huddersfield Grammar pupil an edge over his rivals.

“To be honest, I think my kart’s knackered” the 15-year old said. “I think I better ask my Dad if I can have an early Christmas present”.

But, rather than blame his kit and give up, Lloyd’s never-say-die attitude meant that he dragged his wayward equipment into contention. Taking two 3rd places and a fighting 12th (after being punted off the circuit and down to last place), Daniel qualified in 5th place for the Final.

At the start, Lloyd managed to maintain his position - but again found his kart lacking speed, “I couldn’t keep up with the top 4 but three quarters of the way through the race, they started battling and slowed each other down.” In such close company, any errors would be costly as Stephenson soon discovered, running into the back of Lloyd’s NJR team-mate Max Hawkins and dropping down to 6th. Dan pounced and took 4th. Sensing a trophy was within his grasp, Lloyd attacked and on the last lap, out-braked his team-mate and snatched 3rd. Hawkins responded with everything he’d got but the Yorkshire Air Ambulance ambassador was able to shut the door on every passing manoeuvre.

It was a thrilling race and you’ll be able to watch it soon on Sky Sports 3 (from Friday 29th June - check listings for schedule).

Team boss Nick Jest was pleased with his protégé’s performance, declaring “He drove really, really well.”

Daniel will resume testing duties and compete in selected club events in preparation for the next Stars of Tomorrow round at Llandow, Wales on 15 July 15.
